The ground shuddered again, the surface seeming to ripple slightly as forces beneath the earth's crust pushed and pulled against each other. The movement caused tiny showers of snow to cascade down from the pine trees, the needles themselves quivering like the legs of a newborn fawn. It seemed almost everything was white across the pristine valley, a few solitary aspens springing up from the ground in the middle of a wide field. Though there was something haunting about the beautiful sight. No birds sang. No animals stirred. No breeze rustled the trees. And no stars shone in the sky.
